Before You Begin

While you've likely formally picked out your dream hanging chair, there are many things to be sure of before you make your purchase. First, make sure the hanging chair that you are intending to buy has a weight limit that accommodates those that plan to use it. Second, make sure there is an accessible ceiling joist far enough down from any walls or obstacles to allow the hanging chair to move freely once installed.

Safety Considerations

The safety of a hanging chair is the number one thing to have in mind when installing. However, you've likely assumed that a hanging chair must be fastened to a ceiling joist if you are a DIY kind of person. Still, it's very important that it's not only fastened securely to a ceiling joist but that it's fastened directly in the center of the joist. Otherwise, it will compromise the hold of the bolt. Also, it does not count how safely you install a hanging chair if those that use it do not meet the weight limit. For this reason, while it can look cute on pictures to have the two of you for your social media, just DON’T do it.

How to Safely Install a Hanging Chair

Follow along with the way below to ensure your hanging chair is mounted safely and securely.

  • Detect the Joist

Use a stud finder to detect the ceiling joist behind the drywall. Mark each edge of the joist using a pencil.

  •  Find the Center of the Joist

To find the center of the joist, take a small drill bit and drill into the ceiling at the pencil marks. However, this means you're on the edges of the joist, If both drill points produce wood in the drillbit. However, slightly move your drill consequently until you find the edges of the joist, If this is not the case. Mark the center using a pencil.

  •  Drill trial Holes

Still, drill a pilot hole using a drill bit that is smaller than the bolt's shaft( inside the vestments). If you are using a single heavy- duty pause screw eyebolt, line the tackle up with the center of the joist, and mark the holes on the ceiling, If you are using a hanging chair hardware with more than one bolt. Drill guiding holes at each point. You obviously need to avoid using a pilot drill bigger than the bold.

  •  Install Bolt

Install the bolt or bolts using the necessary tool. However, use the handle of pliers to prop in wringing once the resistance is too important for hand tightening, If installing an eyebolt. Make sure you don't over-tighten or the wood filaments will strip.

  •  Attach Hanging chair to Hardware

Not all hanging swings are created in the same way, but most will likely use a type of grasp to fasten to the hardware. However, the safest way to hang a hanging chair is with a strong chain and locking carabiners, If this is not included with your hanging chair or you need an indispensable result to accommodate high ceilings.

For a more aesthetically pleasing option, numerous people conclude for thick ropes rather than chains. This is possible but you will have to be sure that you know how to make strong knots

  • Set Knots and Test Chair

Once you've safely installed the hanging chair and audited all factors for safety, set the knots by sitting in the chair.

  • Repaint the ceiling

Fill the holes with a paintable caulk and cover with paint to make it as if you never touched it!

When to Call a Professional ?

Honestly? Please consider it.  It’s safety we are talking about. Indeed, it may be wise to consult with a professional before installing a hanging chair, If you are uncertain about the placement of your ceiling joists or the strength and condition of your ceiling joists. Failing to duly install a hanging chair on strong ceiling joists will probably lead to serious injury.

When to Replace a Hanging chair

Hanging chairs that are regularly used should be audited for safety frequently. Fraying material, worn ropes, and broken pieces should be taken seriously, and the hanging chair should be instantly taken down and replaced. If the chair isn't regularly used, it should be audited before use as well.
