Why Architects Choose Reclaimed Ulin

Architects and designers choose reclaimed Ulin for its exceptional durability, tropical climate performance, natural resistance to termites and decay, distinctive reclaimed character and strong sustainability story. It is especially suited for luxury villas, resorts, hospitality spaces and long-lasting architectural details.

Why Reclaimed Ulin Ironwood

Reclaimed Ulin ironwood is valued for its exceptional durability, natural resistance to termites and humidity, and its ability to perform in demanding tropical environments. By repurposing century-old hardwood, reclaimed Ulin also supports a more sustainable approach to architectural construction and design.

We are Kaltimber, aka Kalimantan Recycled Timber, a name that conveys the philosophy of the brand as well as the emphasis on reclaiming and recycling ironwood structures.

We carefully select the best disused boats, bridges or warehouses and turn them into beautiful solid timber products including decking, flooring, ceiling, duckboard, panelling and countertops.

We then take the offcuts and transform them into unique furnitures & homewares.

With Kaltimber, your decking holds centuries of stories, and will become a heritage to be enjoyed for generations to come, a slice of history. This true re-incarnation happens under the careful hands of master craftsmen.

After all, hardwoods take thousands of years to grow and they deserve our utmost respect.

As part of our commitment we are replanting 50 ironwood trees for every 950sqm sold.

As an ethical & socially responsible business, here is our first promise to you:

In 2021, Kaltimber initiated its first ironwood replanting trial by planting 50 Eusideroxylon zwageri (Ulin) trees. Building on this initiative, since January 1st 2022, Kaltimber has committed to replanting 50 Ulin trees for every 950 sqm of fully processed reclaimed decking and/or flooring purchased.

To date, thousands of Ulin ironwood trees have been replanted through Kaltimber’s ongoing environmental initiatives. Beginning in 2025, Kaltimber is further expanding its reforestation efforts through collaborations with environmental organizations and NGOs to support the planting of additional native species and broader ecosystem restoration projects.

As an ethical and socially responsible business, Kaltimber's mission is simple: to create beautiful, long-lasting decking and flooring from recycled ulin ironwood hardwood while respecting our environment and upholding the highest standards of ethical business practices.
Here’s what we promise:

Our woods last a long, long time and so will your hardwood decking and flooring!

Our reclaimed ulin ironwood hardwood is renowned for its durability and natural resistance to termites and decay. Whether used for decking or flooring, this ancient wood is built to stand the test of time, ensuring your spaces remain strong and stunning for years to come.

We will always tell you where our wood comes from.

We take pride in our transparency. You will always know the full journey of your ulin ironwood, from its origin to your home. Our chain of custody ensures that every piece of wood in your decking or flooring comes from responsible, ethical sources, giving you peace of mind with every purchase. And if ulin isn’t the perfect fit, our partner Kitaru Lumber Yard offers other sustainable options.

Responsibly Reclaimed and Recycled

We believe in giving old wood a new purpose. Every piece of our ulin ironwood comes from responsibly salvaged sources, such as old structures and post-consumer materials. Through careful selection and re-milling, we ensure that these timbers retain their strength, character, and durability. By using recycled ulin ironwood hardwood, we reduce the need for fresh logging, minimize waste, and help protect our forests for future generations.

Reducing waste while producing hardwood decking and flooring is one of our top priority.

Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond just decking and flooring. Through our other brand Naturanexa, we create sustainable building components from reclaimed ulin ironwood hardwood. Meanwhile, our home décor brand i-Rewood takes production leftovers and transforms them into stunning, eco-friendly homeware.
By maximizing our use of materials, we ensure nothing goes to waste while offering you even more sustainable options for your home.

We respect natural resources and use our wood wisely.

We respect natural resources and use our wood wisely. We won’t muck around when it comes to forests. Guided by our Environmental Policy, we intentionally design around our materials to reduce waste and maximise the inherent beauty of our timbers. After all, they are older than we are and deserve our respect.

Respecting Nature, Always

Ulin ironwood hardwood is more than just a material—it’s a piece of history. We honor that history by designing around the natural beauty of the wood, preserving its inherent character and uniqueness.

  •  What is flooring?

In Kaltimber’s context, reclaimed flooring refers to solid hardwood flooring manufactured from reclaimed and recycled Ulin ironwood. It is designed for indoor floors in villas, resorts, homes and architectural interiors.

Ulin flooring can be produced in different finishes and installation styles, from straight exposed floorboards to parquet flooring, chevron floor patterns and herringbone wood flooring. Depending on the design, reclaimed ironwood flooring can appear as dark wooden parquet, rustic timber flooring, salvaged wood flooring or a smoother luxury hardwood floor.

Unlike temporary floor coverings such as carpet, rugs or vinyl, Kaltimber flooring is a permanent solid wood floor made from reclaimed tropical hardwood. It is suitable for long-lasting interiors where durability, character and sustainability matter.

  • What is decking?

In Kaltimber’s context, reclaimed decking refers to outdoor boards manufactured from reclaimed and recycled solid Ulin ironwood. It is commonly used for tropical wood decks, pool decks, garden decks, terraces, resort walkways and outdoor architectural spaces.

Unlike indoor flooring, decking is installed outdoors with spacing between boards to allow airflow, drainage and natural movement. Deck boards are usually fixed over joists and battens and can be connected to a building or built as an independent outdoor platform.

Reclaimed Ulin decking combines the durability of hardwood decking with the character of salvaged timber. It is designed for long-lasting wooden outdoor decks in tropical climates while supporting a more sustainable use of existing timber resources.
