Notch
a piece of the wood missing making it non-uniform
Pith
a dark spot which was once an upward growing twig when the tree was young
Sap Wood
the outer layer of the wood of a tree, which, when the tree was living, contained tissue which provided water and food materials to the tree
Split
a crack across the growth rings extending from one surface to another
Twist
a spiral distortion along the length of a piece of timber
Variation
a natural variation of colour in the wood that is neither sap wood or pith is considered normal
