With the beautiful days usually dragging into September, holiday travels might have given you the wish to get the same duckboard outdoor patio you had in that lovely Bali bungalow you were renting.
However you are on a low budget from overspending on margaritas and banana boat trips? Good news, even with a tight work budget, it is possible to create a pretty terrace full of character thanks to premade duckboards or other shapes that do not require a lot of installation skills.
Wood, timeless
Both trendy and not very expensive, wood is one of the most popular materials in the construction of a terrace. Authentic and warm, it brings this timeless and natural charm to any exterior and allows you to create several styles (bohemian, country, cozy or tropical, etc.). Coming in several forms (clip tiles, slats, etc.), it can be laid using different methods.
Obviously, the cost varies depending on the type and species of wood. Also, keep in mind that wood most requires regular maintenance.
This isn’t the case for hardwoods however. Less widespread than softwoods or exotic woods, species such as ironwood, oak, ash or chestnut offer a more ecological alternative, with a good quality-price ratio . A lot of this wood, because of being rare, is recycled from old disused structures, this reclaimed wood properties makes it very ethical and relatively stable due to the low inner moisture. Thus, these local woods gain stability and can be used for between twenty and thirty years.

The composite alternative
Composed in part of wood fibers, the composite imitates the appearance of natural wood, without its disadvantages. If it does not have all the charm of the original, it has the advantage of requiring much less maintenance and adapting to any type of terrace and look. They are generally available from €25 per m2.
Concrete for a bare look
Widely used in construction, concrete is a material that is easy and quick to lay, which creates a clean and neat effect. Design, very smooth, resistant to shocks, bad weather and time, it is available in several colors and finishes ( draining, smooth, etc.) and offers a very attractive price/quality ratio.
Synthetic turf gives the illusion
Ideal for small budgets who dream of creating a green space, this synthetic floor covering combines affordable price and ease of installation. Generally presented in the form of rolls (to be placed on a concrete slab), it intends to imitate the rendering of a beautiful lawn. Beware, however, of entry-level products that can quickly deteriorate.
