What are the differences between all our decking profiles?
Recently, a villa owner seeking pool decking came to us saying “you are more expensive than another”. Our prices being the best in the market, we dug a little to quickly find out that he was comparing very different products! And….that he had paid too much for his.
Therefore, it is important to ask your supplier as many questions as possible. This article should help do that!
While we often think about decking as one type of product, there are variations you should know about in material of course, but profiling as well. The profile details below will give you the elements you need to make sure you are purchasing the right product.
The main difference lies within the profile of every board as well as its detailing At Kaltimber offers 4 different main types of decking board to suit every need and budget:
- Raw
- Square edges
- Semi process
- Full process
No matter the profile, Borneo ironwood, (known locally as Ulin), is a marvellous wood. Its uncommonly slow growth rate at less than 0.5mm a year results in a highly compact timber ideal for outdoor applications. Therefore, unless installation didn’t follow our recommendation, it should last a lifetime. If not and if our products are the issue, we have this!
Raw
This is the raw material, board, as we reclaim it from our Kalimantan dismantling.
In other words, you can’t go more “original” than that!
This isn’t really suitable for immediate installation as most of the ironwood boards still have nail, surface cracks, end split and are often a little muddy. Therefore, this product is mostly destined for contractors who want to work the boards themselves, or installation in non-traffic areas.
Average dimensions are 2.3cm thick, 17 to 19cm wide and 380 to 400cm long.
Pricing will vary. Please contact our sales for detailed quote.
Square edge
We take a raw board on top of the stockpile and process it once in our double planner to reach a fixed thickness. We then process it once on our single rip to get a straight square edge.
The top face can be left rustic (natural) or smooth (double planner process).
Nails are of course removed for safe machinery processing, but nail holes, surface cracks and end split are left untouched.
Square edge boards are always washed with high pressure water to restore their stunning rustic form.
Average dimensions are 2cm thick, 17cm wide and 380 to 400cm long. Other sizes are available on request.
Price range from IDR 130,000/board to IDR 289,000/board depending on model.
Semi process
We take raw boards and process it in the same way as the square edge above. It means that the decking is made safer by removing nails, but that nail holes, surface cracks and end split are still present.
Additionally, every board goes through our moulding to put a profile on.
Top face can be left rustic (natural) or smooth (double planner process).
The rustic look will be highlighted thanks to a high pressure wash. However, due to the texture of Ulin in its raw form we do not recommend using rustic for semi-process Decking.
Average dimensions are 2cm thick, 17cm wide and 380 to 400cm long. Other sizes are available on request.
Price range from IDR 495,000 /m2 to IDR 505,000/m2 depending on model.
Full process
We select each board to perfectly match the end product. It is going through a strict and thorough production process from double planner to the final touch done by the hand of our skillful carpenters.
Nail holes are either glued or plugged , and surface cracks are glued. Top top it off, end splits are either cut off or glued back.
Additionally, the top face is fully sanded to minimum 120 grit for the smooth option, or wire brushed for the rustic option.
Price range from IDR 799,000/m2 to IDR 865,000/m2 depending on model.
